Imagine fluorescent lighting. Imagine a PowerPoint presentation. Imagine a young professional mother. Imagine a semi-intellectual seminar on recovering from postnatal depression. Imagine an analog synthesizer on wheels. Imagine a musical number about your baby falling off the couch. Imagine the world collapsing. Imagine too many words. Imagine too much emotion. Imagine too little hope. Imagine hope. What begins as a hallucinatory seminar on overcoming an existential crisis ends as a cathartic immersion in noise.
The performance will be presented in Dutch during the tour for the seminar section and will include English surtitles. The performance contains a substantial amount of spoken text, with the surtitles providing support for non-Dutch-speaking audiences. The songs are performed in English.
NOISE
In this intensely immersive performance-opera, born from the urgency of learning to navigate a world in decline, Club Gewalt asks itself: how can we retune our senses amid the constant noise of information predicting the apocalypse? How do we make sense of a future that is no longer defined by prosperity?
We live in a time of polycrisis. We are confronted with the resurgence of fascism, the climate crisis, Western complicity in genocide, fruits and vegetables contaminated with PFAS, and our own identities, which turn out to be tainted by (internalized) racism, sexism, and homophobia. We were once promised a future of stability and progress; now, the systems around us—and within us—seem on the verge of collapse. The human survival instinct (LION! DANGER! FIGHT OR FLIGHT! SURVIVE! CELEBRATE!) is failing on a massive scale when it comes to dealing with the complexity of today’s problems. Our amygdalas* become severely overstimulated, leaving us trapped in an anxious limbo.
Can we learn to accept the collapse of systems as a law of nature without abandoning our resistance to injustice? Can we heal ourselves by not only naming these crises, but also truly feeling them? Can we finally complete our stress cycles so that we can navigate a world on fire? Can we fall in love with being human again? And is this the moment to find God? Because one thing is certain: never waste a good crisis.
