Solid Ground presents WIENAAMIK, a moving dance performance about visibly carrying a collective trauma in the form of your surname.
About the dance performance WIENAAMIK
Five dancers from African, Surinamese and Antillean communities share their search for identity and heritage, with a focus on the historical weight of their family names.
Under the direction of renowned choreographer Henry Tawiah, the dancers bring their stories to life. Their surnames, often imposed on their ancestors by slave owners, form the starting point of a personal and emotional journey. WIENAAMIK, derived from “Who am I?”, explores what it means to carry a name with a burdened past.
This performance, in collaboration with the Expertisecentrum Transculturele Therapie, connects dance with genealogical research. In doing so, the contemporary issue of surname changes for descendants of enslaved people is explored in an innovative way.
In addition to the performance, audiences are given a unique insight into the dancers’ stories through short personal documentaries.
