The Queer Image x Black History Month: The Watermelon Woman curated by Clarice Gargard

In het kader van Black History Month trappen Schuur en Nieuwe Vide deze maand af met de film The Watermelon Woman. The Watermelon Woman (1996) van Cheryl Dunye is een speelse en radicale verkenning van de zwarte lesbische geschiedenis. De film, die onlangs herontdekt en opnieuw uitgebracht is, wordt hier vertoond in combinatie met een nabespreking en een tentoonstelling met werken van kunstenaar Mo Futures en Clarice Gargard zelf. Filmcurator Lyse Ishimwe Nsengiyumva sluit aan bij het nagesprek.

Cheryl Dunye schreef, regisseerde en monteerde niet alleen de baanbrekende film The Watermelon Woman, maar speelde ook de hoofdrol. In deze eerste speelfilm geregisseerd door een zwarte lesbische vrouw, speelt ze een 25-jarige Afro-Amerikaanse lesbische vrouw die samen met haar vriendin Tamara in een videotheek in Philadelphia werkt.

"The Watermelon Woman celebrates it's 30th anniversary. What is it's significance within The Culture? How has the cinematic and artistic landscape of Black and queer imagery progressed, digressed or changed? And what is the necessity of examining, archiving and (re)imagining the Black Queer Image in and outside of the current political and social climate? In this programme we explore these questions and the dreams beyond binaries the system provides us with." - Clarice M.D. Gargard

De avond wordt samengesteld en gepresenteerd door Clarice Gargard, journalist, schrijver en documentairemaker, die onlangs het veelgeprezen boek Na verzet komt (r)evolutie publiceerde, over het aanwakkeren van persoonlijke en sociale (r)evolutie.

As part of Black History Month, Schuur and Nieuwe Vide are kicking off this month with the film The Watermelon Woman. Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman (1996) is a playful and radical exploration of Black lesbian history. Recently rediscovered and re-released, it’s presented here alongside an aftertalk and exhibition featuring works by artist mo Futures and Clarice Gargard herself. Joining the aftertalk is film curator Lyse Ishimwe Nsengiyumva.

Cheryl Dunye not only wrote, directed, and edited the groundbreaking The Watermelon Woman, but also took on the lead role. In this first feature film directed by a black lesbian, she plays a 25-year-old African-American lesbian woman who works with her girlfriend Tamara in a video store in Philadelphia.

The evening will be curated and presented by Clarice Gargard, journalist, writer, and documentary filmmaker, who recently published the acclaimed book Na verzet komt (r)evolutie (After Resistance Comes (R)evolution), about sparking personal and social (r)evolution.
