About the dance performance KABITENI
Step into the shoes of a true ‘Kabiteni’ and feel the tensions faced by the powerful Georgetina. She moves between heritage and progress, between what was and what is to come. In doing so, she protects the future of her community, which once rose up against slavery. The performance translates this resistance and resilience into the energetic language of contemporary hip-hop culture.
KABITENI takes you on the story of a village, told by dancers against a backdrop of visual projections filmed in the heart of Suriname. The performance combines a unique history, culture, and innovation into a powerful mix of dance, music, and imagery. Eclectic, warm, and immersive compositions—drawn from hip-hop, Awasa rhythms, and life along the river—form the beating heart of this journey.
