About the dance performance HIDDEN

For her new performance HIDDEN, choreographer Jelena Kostić explores how the spaces we build (cities, homes, borders and digital environments) shape what we see, what we hide and what we are allowed (or not allowed) to see. To achieve this, Jelena collaborates with architect Thomas Bedaux and set designer Davy van Gerven. Together they design a stage in which geometric objects shape the environment, opening, closing, blocking or guiding movement.

HIDDEN uses a constantly shifting landscape of high-contrast light. Beams of light dart across the stage like searching eyes and fleeting openings, revealing bodies while others are immersed in darkness (an echo of how real urban spaces selectively expose things). The aforementioned geometric objects create temporary passages, blind spots and barriers. The dancers must navigate a world that is continuously being rearranged around them.

In HIDDEN, Jelena chooses to work with a group of freerunners—experts in discovering edges, gaps and hidden corners of the city. Their movements reveal secret routes and forbidden zones within an urban landscape. HIDDEN combines their unique physical expression with Jelena’s personal and instinctive movement language, resulting in an exciting, unsettling and unexpectedly moving experience.
