The Kurdish-Indonesian performer Melisa Diktaş combines traditional Kurdish folk dance with urban contemporary dance techniques in her work. The compelling solo Dat wat ontembaar is explores the essence of struggle, survival, and resilience, embodied through the rhythms of Kurdish movement language.
About the dance performance Dat wat ontembaar is
We witness an endless battle, fought by an untamable being in a floral dress, accompanied by the Dahul—the drum that makes the ground tremble. Stomping the floor, she declares that she was, is, and always will be, embodying immortality.
In 2024, the performance won the Best at Fringe Award. The jury wrote: “An expressive mix of rage, pain, a sense of freedom, and the power of rebellion, with a beautiful dynamic between stillness and energy”
