About the dance performance BEHIND THE WALL

This new production builds on the universe of Conny Janssen’s earlier performance HOME (2017/2021), which centred on the question of where and with whom we feel at home. HOME took place in a large, white, anonymous space and ended with an enigmatic image: after all the dancers have left the space, one female dancer remains. She drifts lost through the space and eventually disappears through a high opening in the set. The audience is left behind, looking at the empty white space.

In BEHIND THE WALL, we see the dancers searching for their way in a world where memories, loss and hope are constantly intertwined. What happens to them? What do you carry with you from the past when you have to start again? Where are you allowed to feel at home? And how do you stay connected to where you come from?

The diverse and adventurous ensemble of Conny Janssen Danst brings this search to life with an intensity that is both moving and confronting. With her distinctive choreographic signature — a powerful mix of raw energy and moments of stillness and poetry — Conny Janssen creates a universe in which personal stories and universal questions intersect.

The live music by Dutch-Moroccan artist Roufaida forms the beating heart of the performance. Her layered sound, in which North African influences, alternative pop and poetic lyrics come together, deepens the themes and strengthens the emotional power of the dance.
