10 years after the release of his film Maidan, Sergei Loznitsa resumes his Ukrainian storytelling by documenting the country's struggle against the Russian invasion.
Shot over a period of 2 years, the film portrays the life of the civilian population in Ukraine in times of war. The Invasion shows a unique and intimate testimony of Ukrainian resilience in the face of a barbaric invasion. In the second part of his Ukrainian diptych, Loznitsa paints a monumental canvas of a nation determined to defend its right to exist.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24: INTRODUCTION AND EXPOSITION
On Monday, Feb. 24, exactly three years after Russia’s all-out invasion of Ukraine, the Barn will reflect on the ongoing Russian aggression on Europe’s eastern border with a special screening of the film The Invasion (Cannes 2024) by celebrated Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitza.
The screening of the film will be introduced by Rasom Foundation and Bero Beyer, former director of Film Fund and Film Festival Rotterdam. Using some excerpts and an interpretation of Loznitza’s work, Beyer will give context to the films, focusing on the unique human character and drive of the maker.
Stichting Rasom (Haarlem, Netherlands) has been supporting and guiding Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands since March 2021. The organization has since grown into a community in the city where Ukrainian refugees gather three days a week for a chat, a bowl of soup, produce, clothing and psychological help.
Also on display during the day will be the exhibition “Stolen Life” by the two Ukrainian creators and photographers Oleksandr Zinevych & Daryna Dorohan. You can read more about the project at the bottom of the page.

'Stolen Life'
“Dit project gaat over verlies, over wanneer je een verwoest leven onder ogen ziet zonder ook maar iets over te hebben, naakt als een pasgeboren baby. Hoe opnieuw te beginnen? Ons doel is om een liefdadigheidsproject te maken waarbij het geld dat we inzamelen naar onze verdedigers aan het front en de humanitaire behoeften van burgers gaat. Zodat de levenden degenen die vertrokken zijn kunnen ontmoeten en herdenken.” — Oleksandr Zinevych & Daryna Dorohan
