The film combines a smouldering tale of lust, murder and betrayal with a raw, earthy depiction of life at the lowest level of society. Made during the Fascist era, the film ran afoul of the censors. A recent 4K restoration by VIGGO in collaboration with Cinecittà and CSC – Cineteca Nazionale. Thanks to the discovery and use of previously unavailable material, the restoration reveals the film's extraordinary visual richness, allowing audiences to experience Visconti's masterpiece as never before.
