La terra trema, based on the novel I Malavoglia by Giovanni Verga, is Luchino Visconti's second feature film. The film, which takes place entirely in a small village on the east coast of Sicily and uses local fishermen and other non-professional actors, tells the story of a fishing family.
They try to escape poverty and exploitation by taking out a mortgage on their house and acquiring their own boat, an idea of 'Ntoni, the eldest son. But when a storm destroys the boat, the family initially only falls into deeper trouble.
Later directors Franco Zeffirelli, Francesco Rosi and Antonio Pietrangeli assisted Visconti.
