He plays an Italian President who, in his final term, must make several important decisions while also coming to terms with the loss of his wife.
The term of President Mariano De Santis (Toni Servillo) is drawing to a close. In the echoing halls of the presidential palace, he leads a solitary existence, mourning the loss of his wife. Before returning to ordinary life, De Santis must decide on two major issues still before him: clemency requests from controversial prisoners and a euthanasia bill. His moral objections clash with deeply human desires. What will his legacy be to his beloved Italy?
Paolo Sorrentino captures the story in stunning images and does not hesitate, at times, to surrender to music — much like his protagonist.
