It Was Just an Accident (winner of the 2025 Golden Palm) is a thriller by Iranian master Jafar Panahi in which revenge, humor, and humanity come together.
Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri) is working in the garage when a customer comes in with problems with his car. Vahid is shocked when he thinks he recognizes Eghbal, the officer who tortured him in prison. He smells revenge, but at the same time his doubts grow. Together with a number of fellow sufferers, he desperately tries to uncover the truth. This leads them into situations that range from risky to downright absurd. How can they be sure they've got the right man?
Director Jafar Panahi was himself sentenced to six years in prison and banned from working. He drew on his own experiences for It Was Just an Accident, which he shot after his release without the permission of the Iranian regime. His film has been unanimously enthusiastically received abroad.
