Incendies — English subs

25 years ago, Incendies marked the international breakthrough of Denis Villeneuve (Dune Arrival), the French-Canadian director who has since become a major force in Hollywood. This heart-wrenching and suspenseful drama is now back on the big screen in a stunning 4K restoration.

Twins Jeanne (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin) and Simon Marwan (Maxim Gaudette) are stunned when they receive two letters from their late mother, Nawal (Lubna Azabal), at the notary’s office. One is addressed to their father, whom they believed to be dead; the other is for a brother they never knew existed. They travel to the Middle East to uncover the truth about their family’s past. There, they discover their mother’s tragic fate, shaped by war and hatred, but also by the courage of an extraordinary woman.

Incendies is based on the acclaimed play by Wajdi Mouawad. The film won the Audience Award at IFFR in 2011 and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
