Expat Cinema: The Promised Land

Mads Mikkelsen reunites with director Nicolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) in this historical drama about a violent chapter in Denmark's past.

Denmark, 1755, Captain Ludvig Kahlen has a mssion: to cultivate the wild Danish heaths and build a colony in the name of king Frederik V. In exchange, he expects to be rewarded with a royal title, honours and riches. He meets his enemy in ruthless landowner Frederik de Schinkel, who claims to own the land. Once De Schinkel discovers two of his labourers have escaped to join Kahlen, he starts to plan his vengeance. Kahlen decides to face him head on, endangering both his own and his followers' lives in a violent struggle.
