Film – Hayao Miyazaki
Expat Cinema: Spirited Away
As her family moves to the suburbs, a gloomy 10-year-old girl wanders into a world where gods, witches, and spirits reign and where people are turned into animals.
Fantastic animated film by Hayao Miyazaki, the master animator and director of the mythical animated epic Princess Mononoke (1997).
Spirited Away opens with a family outing that ends up in an abandoned amusement park where the parents of ten-year-old Chihiro are promptly transformed into enormous pigs. The park turns out to be a resting place for all kinds of gods and spirits who have spent their time among humans.
Chihiro learns the absurd rules of her new, precariously capitalist world—together with her friend Haku—and transforms from an average spoiled girl into a confident heroine. For years, it was the most-watched animated film in its home country of Japan and marked Miyazaki's breakthrough with Western audiences, where this unforgettable adventure won a Golden Bear and an Oscar.
