Expat Cinema: Saint Omer
Gripping drama about the doubts surrounding motherhood and racism in France.
Writer Rama is working on a book about Medea and is about to become a mother for the first time. Her research brings her to Saint Omer, where she attends the trial of Laurence Goly, a young Senegalese woman who became pregnant while studying in France. She hid the pregnancy and birth, consciously leaving the baby alone on a beach where it would certainly be drowned by the tide coming in. While on trial, she swears to have been under the influence of witchcraft. The case brings up gohsts from Rama's own past and will leave a giant mark on her own impending motherhood.
