Expat Cinema: Rapito

A Jewish boy is kidnapped and converted to Catholicism in 1858.

1858, the Jewish quarter in Bologna. The pope's soldiers enter the home of the Mortara family. By the cardinal's orders, they are instructed to take their seven-year-old son Edgardo, who was secretly baptized into the Catholic faith as a baby. According to Catholic law, that means he now needs to receive a Catholic education. Edgardo's parents are left behind in despair and do whatever they can to retrieve their son while their struggle becomes politically charged. These true events pitted the papacy against forces of democracy and Italian unification.
