This neo noir is one of China's most successful arthouse films ever.
A woman's body is found in a river, in rural China in the 1990s. Inspector Ma Zhe is tasked with the seemingly simple investigation into the murder case. Several clues and multiple murders complicate matters and Zhe is forced to dig deeper and deeper, even when forbidden by his superiors to investigate further. The case challenges his definition of reality and causes a true obsession.
Shujun Wei's third feature film was a huge success in China, becoming one of the country's most successful arthouse films ever. The film was shot on grady 16mm and features plenty of rain, all adding to the neo noit atmosphere. Based on the novella Mistakes by the River, by Yu Hua.
