Film – Yorgos Lanthimos
Expat Cinema: Dogtooth
This extreme and brilliant (and extremely brilliant) film was Yorgos Lanthimos's big breakthrough.
A family consisting of a father, mother and three children lives in a house on the edge of a town. The house is cordoned off by a big gate and the children have never been outside that gate. The parents raise, educate and entertain them exactly like they want without any outside influence. The only outside person who is invited in is Christina, an employee of the father's company who is hired to deal with the son's sexual development. The whole family loves her, especially the oldest daughter. One day Christina gifts her a headband, but she does expect something in return.
In the fifteen years since Dogtooth, Yorgos Lanthimos has become one of Hollywood's most celebrated directors. Watching his breakthrough film, it's easy to spot his giant talent and to appreciate his enduring f*cked up mind.
