Film – Gabriel Mascaro

Expat Cinema: The Blue Trail

The Blue Trail is a rebellious road movie by Gabriel Mascaro (Neon Bull) about old age, resistance, and the right to keep dreaming.

77-year-old Tereza, born and raised in an industrial town on the edge of the Amazon region, is suddenly ordered to leave her home. The state forces her to move to a so-called “senior colony,” a place where the elderly are supposed to “enjoy” their final years so that the younger generation can focus entirely on growth and productivity.

But Tereza refuses to accept this inhumane measure. Instead of giving up her freedom, she embarks on a clandestine boat trip through the Amazon. What follows is a journey through lush landscapes full of obstacles, unexpected encounters, and a growing realization that freedom knows no age.

The Brazilian film combines social urgency with an atmospheric, visually rich narrative style and shows that aging can also have a completely different face. The Blue Trail won this year's Silver Bear (Grand Jury Prize) at the Berlinale and was received with much praise internationally.
