Paul gives up his successful career as a photographer to devote himself to his true passion: writing. However, his books fail to sell as well as he had hoped, his finances begin to dwindle, and self-doubt starts to creep in. To make ends meet, he takes on handyman jobs, which at first prove rather humbling but eventually provide inspiration for his writing. À pied d'oeuvre is an intimate portrait of the price of artistic freedom and the vulnerability of a Parisian artist.
Director and actress Valérie Donzelli (L'amour et les forêts) premiered the true-story-based À pied d'oeuvre(international title: At Work) in competition at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Screenplay. The French drama is based on Franck Courtes’ autobiographical bestselling novel of the same name.
Bastien Bouillon (Partir un jour, Le comte de Monte-Cristo) stars as Paul Marquet, delivering a powerful and moving performance as a photographer who uncompromisingly chooses a life as a writer, accepting the hardships and social marginality that come with it. The cast also includes André Marcon and Virginie Ledoyen, while director Valérie Donzelli herself appears as Paul’s ex-wife.
